Bipolar Treatment

Understanding & Treating Bipolar Disorder

The bipolar disorder treatment track at Lakeside Behavioral Health System helps patients and their families understand the nature of the illness. Led by a multidisciplinary team of behavioral health professionals, it offers proven treatment strategies that can lead to useful and productive lives.

What Is Bipolar Disorder?

Bipolar disorder is characterized by a series of depressive and manic episodes of unpredictable duration. Manic episodes are periods of inappropriate euphoria, talking too much, extreme irritability, reckless behavior, aggressive behavior, and even out-of-control spending. Conversely, depressive episodes are manifested by excessive crying, low energy, thoughts of death or suicide or major swings in appetite. These episodes can last for weeks or even months. In between manic or depressive episodes, those with bipolar disorder can go for long periods exhibiting apparently normal moods. Despite these temporary periods of calm, the disease is still there, and bipolar disorder can have devastating effects on an individual’s professional, social and family life.

Bipolar Disorder Treatment Track Components

Our Bipolar Track includes:

  • Specialized process groups focusing on bipolar issues
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • Educational groups focused on developing adaptive coping skills
  • Recreational therapy to help plan leisure time, teach skills in exercise and provide social interaction
  • Monitoring of mood and sleep patterns to assist patients in identifying mood cycles
  • Multi-family groups to assist in family education regarding the illness
  • Participation in the Depression Bipolar Support Alliance Group
  • Nutritional education to promote healthy living skills
  • Relapse prevention education

Patients also participate in a bipolar support group, which provides a setting for people to share common problems and to support one another. Family therapy is available for loved ones in weekly multi-family groups. Then weekly aftercare groups are available immediately following discharge to help ensure a smooth transition home.
