Behavioral Health Services for Children and Adolescents in West Tennessee

If your child is exhibiting signs of mental or behavioral health issues, you don’t have to manage it alone. At Lakeside Behavioral Health System, we provide comprehensive care for children (ages 3 to 11) and adolescents (ages 12 to 17) in a structured, calming environment.

Outpatient and Residential Treatment for Teens and Children: Why Choose Us?

Our inpatient and outpatient mental health programs for adolescents guide your child toward a brighter future and continued growth. We treat children and teens in a separate, secure building on our main campus in Memphis. Physicians, psychiatrists, licensed therapists, registered nurses and caseworkers guide their therapy.

We group children by age and acuity level. They receive treatment in different wings, so they get the care that’s right for their needs. Learn more about our levels of care.

Features of our behavioral health services for children include:

  • Inpatient care: Lakeside is one of just a few behavioral health centers in Shelby County offering inpatient treatment for teens and children. We provide immediate, medically supervised stabilization for children in a psychiatric emergency as well as short-term residential treatment.
  • 24/7 assessments and admissions: If your child exhibits signs of a sudden mental health crisis, get help right away. We are here at all times, with or without an appointment, to provide no-cost assessments and prompt admissions into one of our inpatient or outpatient pediatric treatment programs.
  • Educational programming: We offer a curriculum (four hours of schooling each day) from certified teachers. The teachers at our hospital work directly with teachers in each child’s home district to ensure the curriculum is appropriate, and children receive academic credit.
  • Family-centered treatment: We encourage loved ones to participate in treatment. Therapists provide coping strategies for parents to aid the transition back to home and school. Multi-family therapy groups and individual family therapy help rebuild trust and relationships.

Does Your Child Need Psychiatric Treatment?

If your child is exhibiting emotional or behavioral problems, it can be hard to know when it’s time to get professional help.

Consider a psychiatric assessment if your child shows signs of:

  • Withdrawal and isolation
  • Suicidal ideation or self-harm
  • Sudden changes in mood, sleep patterns or appetite
  • Problems coping at school or socially
  • Persistent worry, fear or anxiety
  • Extreme anger, aggression or temper tantrums

Our inpatient and outpatient programs offer comprehensive care for a wide range of mental and behavioral health concerns, including:

  • Depression and anxiety
  • Drug and alcohol use
  • Trauma and abuse
  • Eating disorders
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Grief and loss
  • Relationship dependence

Recovery Academy

Recovery Academy is a treatment program for children (ages 12 to 17) with mild or moderate behavioral health issues, general psychiatric disorders or substance use. This program may be right for adolescents who are in treatment for the first time. Group therapy, trauma resolution, anger management and medication therapy are common treatment approaches.

Bridges Program

Our Bridges Program treats adolescents (ages 12 to 17) who are dealing with severe behavioral health issues that have increasingly disrupted their lives, homes and communities. Teenage patients in this program often demonstrate high-risk behaviors, such as self-harm, suicidal ideation or violent aggression.

The Bridges staff works closely with patients, parents and caseworkers (as necessary). We provide stabilization and teach teens how to make better choices, develop social skills and learn coping mechanisms to improve their quality of life.
