50th Anniversary Celebration

The CEO and staff of Lakeside Behavioral Health System invited the community to its 50th Anniversary Celebration on Wednesday, September 25 at the Lakeside Campus, featuring keynote by Chris Herren-speaker, author and recovery advocate.

“We are honored to share our 50 year anniversary celebration with our community and hope everyone can join us to mark this special moment,” said CEO Joy Golden. “In addition to our celebration, there are important observances occurring this month as well. September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month and also Recovery Month. 2019 marks the 30th anniversary of National Recovery Month. The theme this year is ‘Join the Voices for Recovery: Together We Are Stronger.’ Lakeside is proud to be a partner in helping to educate and treat patients suffering from the drug epidemic facing our community.

“According to a recent study by the Harris Poll on behalf of the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, 94% of Americans would take action to help someone who was thinking about suicide,” stated Golden. “How can you help? Communication is key! If you or someone you know is thinking about suicide, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).

“Unfortunately, there can be non-compliance among mental health patients who stop taking necessary medications because they feel better,” stated Golden. “Education is a continuing challenge for us. I am fortunate to have the opportunity to work in this field and often say, ‘There is joy in the journey.’ Sometimes all patients need is somebody to listen and to instill confidence and hope that with treatment options and medication, they can have a better life.”

Celebrating 50 Years of Healing

In 1969, Lakeside Behavioral Health System opened its doors with one mission in mind: to provide specialized behavioral health care and addiction treatment in a welcoming environment for people in search of healing. Our 37-acre campus, located on the outskirts of Memphis, Tennessee, features a state-of-the-science, 365-bed facility designed to make recovery an accessible, effective reality in the lives of our patients.

The original hospital, located in what is now the Adult Unit East building, opened as Tranquil Air in 1969. Tranquil Air was built and operated by a medical group of physicians in Memphis. The facility was purchased in the 1970’s by Charter Medical and remained part of the Charter Corporation until it was acquired by Universal Health Services in 2000.

From a single building in 1969, the campus has grown to seven buildings providing inpatient patient care on a 24/7 basis. There are now a total of ten buildings on campus including administration, support services, a gymnasium/training center, and Cresthaven Outpatient Clinic located in the former Conference Center Building.

The hospital has had the opportunity to celebrate a number of grand openings as new buildings were constructed over the past 50 years to accommodate more patients. Each new construction provided an opportunity to celebrate as Lakeside grew to provide mental health and substance use disorder services to patients entrusted in our care. Lakeside’s last addition opened in 2016 as Brunswick Place, our geriatric unit, and includes our Neurosciences Outpatient Center for Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS).

Recent Hospital Highlights:

  • The ECT Suite was accredited by the Joint Commission in 2019.
  • The Landing-Addiction Services opened in July 2019 to focus on substance abuse services. With two units dedicated to professionals, the original Landing is now The Landing-Behavioral Health.
  • The Landing unit opened in April 2017. This unit focused on providing individualized care for working professionals.

Year after year, Lakeside has provided community service activities to nursing homes, church groups, law enforcement, business and industry, and mental health providers. Two annual Professional Conferences with a total of 500 attendees at each has provided an outstanding opportunity for Lakeside to partner with our local mental health professionals to provide continuing education related to mental health and substance abuse topics.
